About the course

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical course whose general eligibility criteria include candidates having cleared their 10+2 board exams with an average aggregate score of 55%. MBBS Admission takes place solely through the NEET Exam and students are allotted colleges based on their NEET scores. Top MBBS colleges include AIIMS Delhi, CMC, Vellore, BHU, Varanasi, JIPMER, and AMU, Aligarh where the average MBBS course fee ranges from INR 30,000 to INR 1 Crore. Students after completing an MBBS degree are placed across various top government and private hospitals as Doctors and Surgeons with an average salary ranging from INR 7.50 LPA – 10 LPA.

Now, to enrol in the MBBS course, candidates must pass Class 12 in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, English (which shall include practical tests in these subjects) and Mathematics subjects and be over 17 years of age. Additionally, they must achieve a rank in the NEET UG merit list to be eligible for the MBBS course. The MBBS admission is based only on the entrance test for the MBBS course, i.e., NEET UG. After completing MBBS students can work as medical practitioners in hospitals or clinics. They can also specialize in surgery or pediatrics through further training. Students can be employed in hospitals and healthcare centers, government organizations, NGOs, etc. Besides this, most goes for MD, as it gives more scope and diverse career opportunities.

Eligibility

MBBS Eligibility requires students to have scored sufficient scores in NEET. Moreover, appearing for NEET requires students to have passed 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as mandatory subjects. However, a recent development by the National Medical Commission has allowed students with Biology as an additional subject to appear for NEET.

Specialization in MBBS

Paediatrics It focuses on the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, typically up to 18.
General Medicine It involves the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a wide range of illnesses and health conditions in adults.
Obstetrics & Gynaecology It deals with the health of the female reproductive system, including pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive organs.

NExT Exam Dates, Syllabus, Pattern

The National Exit Test (NExT) examination is expected to be implemented in August 2025 to replace the final MBBS exams, NEET PG, and FMGE. As per NExT (National Exit Test) Regulations 2023, NExT will be conducted in 2 phases, which will be held 2 times a year. The first step of the exam will be theory and the syllabus will include 6 subjects. Whereas, the second step will be used to prepare a merit list for broad specialties.

The exam pattern will be different for two steps which are mentioned below:

NExT Step 1 Exam Pattern

  1. The exam will be conducted online and will constitute 540 MCQ questions.
  2. This exam will be based entirely on theory.
  3. Step 1 will have 6 papers and the syllabus will be MBBS 3rd year and 4th year.

NExT Step 2 Exam Pattern

  1. This will include 1-year mandatory internship after passing the step 1.
  2. This step will check the practical knowledge of the candidate.
